Please note: The content and frequency of updates on this LIVE TEXT COMMENTARY service is ependent on the information provided on the race radio channel, the quality of the Cellular Coverage and the atmospheric conditions. As we are passing through many rural areas in a time of the year when the weather can be changeable, there may be long periods of time when it is not possible to update the web site. In bad weather or on a stage with a lot of activity, radio priority is give to the safety of the riders and sometimes updates on the race are not possible.

15:10

We are now moving forward of the lead two as the chase bunch isn't too far behind...

15:09

15:08

16 Roman van Uden (PBR) and 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS) are gunning it.

15:06

The peloton is blowing to bits chasing 16 Roman van Uden (PBR)  and 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS)

15:06

16 Roman van Uden (PBR) 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS) have decided to give it a go and have taken off. The others are waiting for the main bunch now.

15:06

These riders have sat up to wait for peloton:

27 Bevan Mason (APH)

10 Karl Murray (STR)

81 Sam Steele (TMT)

15:04

The sun is out here to greet the riders. Breakaway is highly disorganised right now.

15:04

The leading group are now 53 seconds ahead. The leaders seems to be looking at each other instead of keeping the hammer down. They are not lapping out now.

15:02

Bluff Hill is looming infront of us. Just passed the 10km to go sign.

15:02

At Greenhills, we have a tail wind. The pace increases and the leaders are sitting on 55 km/h.

The gap is now 1:03 at 71km.

15:02

1.03 minutes to the break....

14:59

The latest time gap is 1:10 after 69km. The gap is closing.

14:58

I must say, with the nice weather here, it has been a relatively uneventful stage so far... But its not over yet!!

14:57

Looking out the back window, the peloton is definitely approaching the leaders. Whether or not they get before the bottom of the hill is yet to be seen...

14:55

At the end of the Awarua straight the peleton can probably see the leaders. We are discussing whether the break will stay away or will be shut down.

The gap is now 1:25 at 66km.

3 of us reckon that the break will get shut down ... Graeme reckons it will be touch and go.

14:52

BikeNZ Road Director Andy Reid predicts 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS) to win the stage! Hmmm, he is the best climber in the lead group, but they may get caught before the bottom of the hill. The peloton can now see the lead group way up the road.

14:51

The leading 5 riders have a crossiwnd to deal with for a few kms. 10 Karl Murray (STR) is finding the going tough and missing his laps. 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS) and 16 Roman van Uden (PBR) are driving the break.

14:31

The leading bunch are now back together on Stead Street. Currently, they are sitting on about 55 km/h.

Not a lot going on at the moment. The pace has dropped a bit as we continue along Bay Road/Otatara Road approaching Otatara Golf Club.

14:16

The leaders have just turned onto Bay Road. They have done 40km now.

14:08

CSB Calder Stewart Bike NZ National is still on the front on the peloton doing all of the work.

14:06

2:41 was the lead and 49 Alex Meenhorst (SVS) smiled and took off with the others following close behind.

The leaders have just turned onto Steele Road. This is where we had the big crash last year.

14:03

The leaders are now up to 50 km/h approaching Isla Bank.

14:02

16 Roman van Uden (PBR)

29 Wade Mangham (APH)

10 Karl Murray (STR)

14:00

Mayor Tim Shadbolt was at the Team's Presentation last night, and again at the beginning of the stage today. I never realised what a comedian he was - full of jokes!

14:00

We have just slotted in behind Geoff Adams trust red Neutral Spares vehicle. The leaders are rolling along at 42 km/h. No sign of the peleton out the back window.

13:57

Break has extended their lead slightly - 2.04 now.

13:50

Breakaway has a two minute lead on the peloton. We have done 22.2km.

13:49

Turning onto State Highway 6, three riders have gone off the front after the 20.8 Km Swain Family (Makarewa School) Sprint.

The gap back to the peleton seems to have grown.

13:49

Breakaway split at the 20.8 Km Swain Family (Makarewa School) Sprint  - will have the results of that sprint shortly. It is likely that now they have the sprint points they will wait for the rest of the break to join them.

13:46

Looking back over my shoulder, the leading group seem to have increased their lead. We reckon that the prediction of  21 degrees is not going to happen today. There is some wind but nothing like what we had last year when there was carnage.

13:45

CSB Calder Stewart Bike NZ National is at the front driving the peloton.

13:43

Every driveway out here in the country has a farmer out on their motorbike waiting for the Tour to come through! Bet they are tempted to sneak into the back of the peloton on their motorbikes.

13:42

Time gap between the break and the peloton is 1 minute 26 seconds at about 16km.

13:41

Turning onto Flora Road, the gap looks pretty big now. 97 has just been caught by the main bunch.

13:40

3rd 27 Bevan Mason (APH)

13:34

13:27

Great to see the kids out on the side of the road from St Johns Girls School cheering on the peleton. My youngest daughter Emma and her friends were making a lot of noise.

13:25

Good to see school kids out supporting the Tour, heaps with green PowerNet flags.

13:24

Brenton reckons Jack Bauer will be hard to beat today.

THE BATTERY JUST WENT FLAT IN OUR VEHICLE. THANKS TO A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC FOR GIVING US A JUMP START.

Josh Atkins, Matt Marshall, Michael Vink are all names that have been tipped to do well along with George Bennett.

13:22

And they're racing!

13:22

There was a big crash on this stage last year which pulled Hayden Roulston out of contention. Fingers crossed that today is crash free!

13:14

The first sprint is at 2.5 km and some of the riders will be keen to get some points on the board and will be quick out the blocks.

13:12
