Please note: The content and frequency of updates on this LIVE TEXT COMMENTARY service is ependent on the information provided on the race radio channel, the quality of the Cellular Coverage and the atmospheric conditions. As we are passing through many rural areas in a time of the year when the weather can be changeable, there may be long periods of time when it is not possible to update the web site. In bad weather or on a stage with a lot of activity, radio priority is give to the safety of the riders and sometimes updates on the race are not possible.

11:08

New Zealand Police are leading though a large number of public vehicles. The Police do a fantastic job and it would be fair to say that without their support, the PowerNet Tour of Southland would not happen.

11:01

Hearing over the race radio that 39 Shane Archbold (PNT) is having some mechanical issues after an incident earlier in the stage. Hopefully, he can get it sorted out so he can get back to the main bunch.

John Cardwell, commentating for CUE TV/Sky TV last night, appeared to confuse 37 Tom Scully (PNT) and 39 Shane Archbold (PNT).

Obviously John did not spot Novie's trademark mullet!

10:59

After 6km, there have been a couple of early breaks that were  unsuccessful and easily shut down.

10:07

The stage has just started from Lumsden.

I was talking to some of the riders in Lumsden and many were amazed at the weather conditions for the first 3 days. 41 Chris Nicholson (PNT) has ridden in many tours and cannot remember a tour like this one for good weather. That may change today....

10:03

Overcast in Lumsden as we prepare for the start of the stage.

There will probably be a lot of movement in the General Classification today with the climb at the end of this stage.

77 Matthew Marshall (STH) is only 5 seconds off the lead of the Under 23 leader, 62 Daniel Barry (BMH). Sitting at 1:21, 7th on GC, Matt is a good climber and will be looking to make up some time. 19 Floyd Landis (OVM) is at 1:02 in 4th, ahead of 43 Michael Olheiser (JPW) at 1:10.

09:23
